Pump Bottles

12 04 2008

I love the idea of letting kids decorate bottles of soap or shampoo to get them interested in using the contents!  (My son hates washing his hair, and this makes it more fun for him!)

You will need:

  • Permanent markers
  • An empty pump bottle

Good to have:

  • Clear packaging tape

The Project:

I wrote the label’s words on the bottle first, then drew the designs in the leftover space.  You can draw the designs and have your child color them in like I did, or you can let them design the whole thing on their own.  That’s up to you.  Also, you don’t have to stick to the front!  It would be pretty if the design traveled around the whole bottle, too!  After we finished coloring the bottles, I put a strip of clear packaging tape over the design to help protect it from washing off over time.  That’s really it.  Quick and easy.

Tips:

  • If you get bubbles under your packaging tape, push them out with a credit card or carefully peel the tape back and re-stick it.  Be careful not to re-stick the tape if some of the marker designs transfer to the tape.  You might need to do some design touch-ups and use a new piece of tape.
  • Reuse an empty hand soap pump if you can.  Just wash it out really well, peel off the label, and remove any leftover sticky residue with Goo-Gone or lighter fluid.  (Amazingly, lighter fluid removes sticky residue really well.  Thanks, Stacey, for teaching me that!)
  • If you are using a clear bottle, place a white piece of paper under it while you are designing and coloring the bottle to make the marks show up better.

PHOTO OP:  A picture of your young one using the bottle’s contents next to the bottle they designed or colored would be really nice, don’t you think?!
