I forgot how much fun these are! It’s like magic when the colors begin to appear as you draw!
You will need:
- Construction paper
- Crayons
- Tempera paint
- Paintbrush
- Scraping tools (toothpick, popsicle stick, coins, etc)
Good to have:
- Hairdryer
- Colored pencils
The Project:
Cover the paper with thick crayon. You can do a design, picture, name, or random blobs of color, just as long as it is thick and covers the paper as completely as possible. Paint over the crayon with the tempera paint; it might take several layers because the paint doesn’t like to stick to the crayon. As soon as the paint is dry, use the scratching tools to scratch away the paint and reveal the beautiful colors underneath!
Tips:
- The crayon part of this project is too hard for my three year old son to do because of the pressure required, so I just do that part ahead of time. He loves painting over it, though!
- I use the hairdryer to dry the paint quicker.
- You can color on tempera paint with colored pencil to mark out a design or name for the kids to use as a guide.
- The little paint chips are messy. Be prepared to find small pieces of dried paint all around the crafting area!
